The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, sounded an alarm on Wednesday over the increasing number of unclaimed bodies in the hospital’s mortuary.

If their family and friends do not come forward within two (2) weeks of this publication, the management has threatened to give the corpses a mass burial.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Achonu Hacinta, revealed that a large number of bodies have remained unidentified in the morgue.

Recall that Imo State was turned into a war zone a few months ago, with bodies overrunning the Federal Medical Centre’s mortuary in Owerri.

Many of the bodies are said to be extrajudicial execution victims or those caught in the crossfire between security personnel and unknown gunmen.

The hospital has now issued an appeal to individuals who may have missing relatives to come to the hospital morgue, as the limited space is now overflowing with bodies whose addresses or relatives are unknown.

“The relatives are asked to come and identify and claim the bodies within two weeks,” it stated, adding that bodies not claimed within that time would be buried in mass graves.
