Man indetified as Ekike Hector David, an indigene of Mbiokporo 1 in the Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has been arrested for allegedly illegally manufacturing AK47 rifles and other types of weaponry, according to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
SP Odiko Macdon, the command’s Public Relations Officer, claimed in a press statement issued in Uyo, the State capital, that the suspect was arrested with eight (8) locally made AK47 rifles, one (1) Pump Action, one (1) pistol, and six (6) dane guns.
He claimed that the suspect, a welder, fabricates and sells guns to criminals who use them to rob and intimidate innocent people around the state.
The statement in parts, “On the 13th of September, 2021, at about 1pm, Surveillance Team of ‘A’ Division located at Barracks Road, while on routine stop and search operation to stem criminal activities along Uyo Village Road and environs, arrested one Ekike Hector David of Mbiokporo 1 in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area with eight (8) locally fabricated AK47 Rifles, one (1) Pump Action, one (1) pistol and six (6) Dane Guns.
“The suspect is a welder who specializes in creating and selling locally made rifles and other types of weaponry to criminal elements who use them to terrorize innocent members of the public,” according to the preliminary inquiry.
He went on to say that the Commissioner of Police, CP Amiengheme Andy, has ordered a discreet inquiry into the incident as well as a manhunt for the suspect’s patrons.
He stated that the command would continue to safeguard the public while also removing criminal elements from the state.
“CP Amiengheme Andy, psc(+), fdc has authorized an extensive inquiry aimed at apprehending those who benefit from his patronage as well as other conspirators,” he said.
