Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, has equaled Pele’s South American men’s goal scoring record.
In a World Cup qualifying match in Buenos Aires, Argentina defeated Bolivia 3-0, with Messi scoring a hat-trick.
With this goal, he now has 79 international goals, two more than Pele.
Messi, on the other hand, trails Marta (109) and Cristiane (96) for the most goals scored by a South American player in international competition.
The 34-year-friend old’s and Paris Saint-Germain teammate Neymar, who has 69 international goals for Brazil, is third on the men’s list.
“I was quite apprehensive, and all I wanted to do was enjoy the evening. This was something I had been looking forward to for a long time.
“We won the game that was the most important thing and now we can celebrate,” an emotional Messi said after the match.
