Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United has overtaken Iker Casillas’ appearance record in the Champions League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started the 36-year-old from the start against Villarreal on Wednesday night.
Ronaldo’s 178th appearance in the competition put him ahead of Casillas, the former Real Madrid goalkeeper.
When Ronaldo started in United’s 2-1 loss to Young Boys, he equaled Casillas’ record.
Paco Alcacer gave Villarreal the lead at Old Trafford, but Alex Telles equalized with a long-range strike.
Ronaldo stepped up at the far post with seconds left in the game to clinch the winner.
