Anambra Guber: INEC takes final decision, assure peaceful election on Nov 6

INEC Set For Assembly By-election In Delta

Despite threats from the banned Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has maintained on holding the Anambra State governorship poll on the earlier date of November 6.

Earlier, the secessionist group has promised that the election will not take place since the Federal Government has refused to free its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Knau, who is currently detained by the Department of State Services in Abuja.

Unknown gunmen reported to be members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, a security section of the IPOB, have continued to wreak havoc in Anambra and other areas of the region, prompting some major political officials to suspend their campaigns.

INEC convened an emergency Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting on Tuesday in response to the state’s security situation.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated during the meeting that the poll will not be postponed due to the security situation.

“Unfortunately, since our previous meeting, the situation has deteriorated significantly. Many innocent people have died, and property has been ruined.

“According to the reports we’ve received, many of the assailants’ stated purpose is to prevent the governorship election slated for November 6, 2021 from taking place.

“The commission should be concerned about this. We are quite afraid that certain voting facilities and materials could be targeted once more. Remember that our State Office in Awka was attacked in May of this year, and all of the non-sensitive election materials assembled at the time were destroyed.

“In addition, our store, collation center, and main office building were all damaged to some extent. The Poll Commission also lost a number of cars that were supposed to be used for the election.

“To emphasize this determination, the commission will carry out two more operations on the election Timetable in the next days. On Thursday, October 7, 2021, the voter registration list will be handed to political parties in Awka. The commission will release the final list of candidates for the election on the same day,” he stated.
