Deploy security to Anambra to curb killings – Reps tells NSA

The National Security Adviser (NSA) and other security agencies have been advised by the House of Representatives to deploy all necessary machinery to Anambra State in order to manage the threat of insecurity in the state.

This came after Rep Chris Azugbogu (PDP-Anambra) introduced a resolution of urgent public interest on the House floor in Abuja on Tuesday.

In his motion, he expressed severe worry about security breaches in Anambra, which had hitherto been a quiet state but is suddenly becoming a hotbed of attacks by unknown gunmen.

He went on to say that the killings were staged by saboteurs who wanted to instill fear and tension in the state ahead of the election.

Azugbogu claimed that not a single day goes by without a report of robbery, kidnapping, or outright murder, and that the culprits lacked human conscience.

Dr Chike Akunyili, the late former Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Dora Akunyili, and eight others were slaughtered on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Nkpor, Onitsha, Anambra, according to him.

The police station in Orumba north was assaulted the next day, and individuals were killed,” he stated.

He said that his truck was attacked on Sept. 30 at Nnewi Nnobi Road, resulting in the death of one of his drivers.

On Oct. 3, he claimed, the Department of State Security’s office was also burned down, with individuals slain and homes destroyed.

Azugbogu stated that there was a need to collaborate with security authorities in order to prevent such acts and make the state safe for law-abiding residents to conduct their lawful activities.

He warned that unless immediate action was taken to halt and confront the elements terrorizing the states, the situation in Anambra would escalate into a serious crisis affecting the entire South East and the country.

As a result, the House charged the committee on national security, intelligence, and police affairs with restoring normalcy in the state and reporting back to the House within three weeks.

A minute of silence was also conducted in the House for the late driver and other victims.
