The Abia State Police Command has arrested Obinna Nwatu, a Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) student, for staging his own kidnapping in order to extort money from his mother, Mrs. Rose Nwatu.
The 17-year-old boy pretended to be kidnapped in order to extract money from his parsimonious mother.
CP Janet Agbede, the State Commissioner of Police, told reporters on Friday at the command headquarters in Umuahia that one Wisdom Nwatu claimed his younger brother Obinna Nwatu, 17, had been kidnapped.
When he went to get a recharge card, he was kidnapped along Stadium road in Okpuala Ngwa by unknown hoodlums driving an ash-colored Sienna with an unknown registration number.
However, following an inquiry, the Command’s Anti-kidnapping squad apprehended one Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe, whose bank account was used to receive a ransom of N200,000 only.
“Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe told the police after his detention that Obinna Nwatu fabricated his own kidnapping,” CP Agbede added.
“Obinna and one Favour Ugorji a.k.a. “Wizzy” approached him at his shop on Aba Road, Abia State, and begged that he give them his bank account so that they may use and receive their baby sister’s school fees,” he said. Mrs. Rose Nwatu paid in two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) as a ransom, according to the investigation. Obinna Nwatu and Ugorji received the money through the account (mother of Obinna Nwatu).
“Obinna Nwatu admitted that he was not kidnapped. He plotted with Favour Ugorji, also known as “Wizzy” (who is still at large), to go into hiding at a motel with Rhema University Road Aba.
“Obinna who is a Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3) student and lives in a boarding school decided to fake his own kidnap claiming that his mother Mrs. Rose Nwatu is stingy.”
