According to a high-ranking police source, the off-duty NYPD cop who allegedly shot her ex-girlfriend and killed her new lover may have snapped because she was holding to hope that they’d get back together.
Officer Yvonne Wu, 31, had recently split with her ex, Jenny Li, 23, but continued to spend the night at Li’s Brooklyn home on occasion — and may have lost it when she found her there with another woman, according to a source.
“She had been staying there on and off for a while.” She was still spending some nights there. It’s not that weird; perhaps she still believed it could work out,” the person explained.
According to authorities, Wu, who works at the 72nd Precinct and lives on Staten Island, opened fire on Li and her new partner, Jamie Liang, 24, at their house on 19th Avenue near 79th Street in Bensonhurst on Wednesday night.
“When the cops arrive, she tells them, ‘I shot them both.’ “The gun is inside, and everything is as quiet as can be,” the person claimed.
Liang was discovered with a bullet wound in her chest and was sent to Maimonides Medical Center, where she died. According to authorities, Li was in a serious but stable condition on Thursday.
According to investigators, Wu and Li dated for two years before breaking up three weeks ago, resulting in the sad love triangle.
“This is a rude awakening.” Another police source described Wu as “a gentle, kind person.”
Wu, a five-year NYPD veteran, was most likely waiting inside the house when the two victims arrived, but investigators say it’s unclear how she got in.
On Thursday, she was being evaluated at the NYU Langone hospital in Brooklyn.
