The Ogun State police command has detained three youngsters for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist in Iperu, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s hometown.
Sodiq Awokoya (18), Odunayo Samson (18), and Jimoh Rilwan (17) were arrested on suspicion of “killing the rider, Bashiru Umaru, before stealing his motorcycle.”
The three youths were apprehended on October 8 at the Toll Gate area of Ogere, “where they had gone to sell the stolen bike,” according to Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Ogun police spokeswoman.
The prospective buyer, according to Oyeyemi, wanted the motorcycle’s documentation.
“When the three suspects gave various explanations of how they came about the motorcycle, the individual who wanted to acquire the bike got suspicious,” Oyeyemi added.
According to Oyeyemi, the buyer surreptitiously informed the police in Ogere division, prompting the DPO, CSP Abiodun Ayinde, to lead his men to the spot and detain the suspects.
“They told the police that the motorcycle was stolen from Iperu Remo after interrogation, and they were then given over to the police in Iperu division.”
“Coincidentally, the police brought the suspects from Ogere with the stolen motorcycle at the time the deceased’s relatives came to register a complaint about their missing person.”
“When the relatives of the deceased saw the motorcycle, they immediately recognized it and alerted the police that the motorcycle brought with the suspects belonged to their missing brother,” he said.
The suspects eventually confessed to stealing the motorcycle, claiming that Umaru was still tied to a tree in the bush, according to the Metro Times.
Police officers rushed to the location with the suspect, only to learn that “the suspects had cut him to death before stealing the motorcycle.”
Further investigation revealed that Samson Odunayo was the one who summoned the deceased to take him somewhere in Iperu, despite the fact that the okada man had already told Sodiq Awokoya to wait in a bush along Iperu’s Ona Eri area with a cutlass and other dangerous weapons, unbeknownst to the okada man.
“When Samson Odunayo got to the point, he told the deceased to halt. Sodiq Awokoya came out with a cutlass and slashed down the deceased while he was waiting to collect his money. Samson Awokoya approached him, squirming in pain, and gripped his neck till he gave up the ghost. They examined his pocket and discovered N5,500, which they took as well,” Oyeyemi continued.
Meanwhile, Lanre Bankole, the Commissioner of Police, has ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State CIID for a discreet investigation, with the intention of prosecuting them in court once the investigation is completed.
