Nikolas Cruz has agreed to plead guilty to all charges stemming from the 2018 Parkland school shooting atrocity in Florida, which claimed the lives of 17 people and injured another 17.
According to WSVN in Miami, the 23-year-old confessed gunman will plead guilty to 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.According to the article, the plea agreements, which are likely to be disclosed by lawyers tomorrow, would allow the defendant to avoid an emotionally charged trial and continue directly to the sentence phase, which would be decided by a jury.
Cruz is also expected to plead guilty to an assault on a Broward County jail guard that was caught on camera, according to the station.Cruz’s lawyers earlier stated that if prosecutors removed the death sentence from the equation, he would plead guilty, a proposal that the state rebuffed.
Cruz allegedly stormed into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an assault rifle and opened fire on students and staff, sobbing loudly in court last week after officials took away his Pokémon coloring book.
The massacre is still the bloodiest high school shooting in United States history.
