Inside the bandits’ stronghold, Alhaji Muazu Abubakar, the father of Zamfara State Speaker Nasiru Muazu Magarya, is said to have died of a heart attack.
According to the Blueprint, the deceased’s older brother, Mallam Dahiru Saraki Magarya, revealed this in an interview on Saturday.
Abubakar, his wife, a three-week-old infant, Malam Magarya, and two other people were kidnapped eight weeks ago.
Julius Oshadumo, a former provost of Kogi State College of Education (Technical) in Kabba, was killed in crossfire between his abductors and local security personnel during a rescue mission a fortnight ago.
Armed bandits kidnapped the victim two Sundays ago when they stormed the ECWA church in Okedayo, Kabba, Kogi State, killing one person and shooting several worshippers.
Malam Magarya told Blueprint that a bandit boss known as Kachalla informed him that his brother had died of heart failure a day before they were rescued by security.
Ayuba Elkanah, the state Commissioner of Police, presented the rescued victims to reporters in Gusau yesterday.
All of the victims, he said, had had various medical examinations and will be reunited with their families.
When the fleeing bandits abandoned them at their separate camps, he added, the 16 victims, including a three-month-old baby named Khadija Muazu and her mother Hauwau Muazu, were rescued and safely returned.
Elkanah, on the other hand, told the speaker’s father that attempts were being made to free him from his kidnappers.
