According to the NYPD, the tragic New Year’s Day attack was the first reported homicide of the new year in the five boroughs.

According to sources, the city registered 485 homicides in 2021, up 4% from the 468 recorded in 2020. On Saturday, the NYPD had not yet announced its year-end crime data.

Despite the tiny increase, the city’s murder rate remained significantly lower than previous year’s highs. In 1990, there were a total of 2,245 murders, which was a new high.
