Adopted son leads operation in Anambra, kills 8, injures 20

Scores feared dead as suspected security operatives, Shiites members clash in Abuja

It was a black Monday night in Ogbunike, Oyi local Government area, Anambra State as eight persons were reportedly shot by suspected gunmen.

It was gathered that the gunmen invaded the community around 8pm and started shooting sporadically. In the process, eight persons were reportedly killed while over 20 persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

An eye witness (name withdrawn) said they came on a Mercedes Benz and stopped at a popular pub known as “Shop Chyco” and shot one person while over five persons sustained bullet injuries.

“We are suspecting someone popularly known as Bigy, from Ukalor village Ogbunike. Before the incident, his kindred denied him a shop, for his business, on the ground that was an adopted son of his family. He got angry and swore to retaliate.

” When they came, they visited the house of the man that denied him the shop. But they did not see him and shot a motorist in the man’s compound.

” They also shot three persons ; two boys and a woman at Osile Ogbunike, then went to Ukalor where they also shot other people.” He said

Another source noted that the community must sit up to the incessant insecurity in the town.

He said, “I believe that we may be dealing with a well co-ordinated gang. If we will recall, an incident like this happened at Nkwo Amawa, where one young man was beheaded, his head was later found in Ifitte Dunu. It extremely important that a thorough investigation is conducted to get to the root of this issue. Random suggestions will not lead us anywhere..” He said.

When contacted, the President General, Ogbunike Community, Comrade Chigozie Ikegwuru, who regretted the incident said said he had placed measures o ground to investigate and fish out the hoodlums.

The State’s Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said, “Anambra State Police responding teams is currently at ifite Ogbunike and it’s environs following a shooting incident that took place today 10/01/22 at about 8pm.

” Preliminary investigation reveals that it is cult related clash involving two rivalry cult groups.

” The suspected cultists came with a Mercedes Benz 200model and started shooting sporadically. As a result of the shooting two persons who where fatally wounded were rescued by police responding teams within the area and they were taken to the hospital. Meanwhile mop up operations is ongoing in area.” Ikenga noted.
