Deji Adeyanju, a popular socio-political activist, praised Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday over his insistence on a timeframe for the new currency.
Politicians pressing for a deadline extension, according to Adeyanju, are engaged in vote-buying.
“I stand with Godwin Emefiele on the January 31st deadline of new currency,” Adeyanju wrote in a discussion with. The politicians who are resisting this are only concerned in purchasing votes.”
Adeyanju’s remark comes after the Senate asked the central bank to extend the collection of obsolete naira notes until July 31, 2023.
After extensive debate, the Senate arrived at the revised deadline via an adopted resolution.
The CBN redesigned the N200, N500, and N1000 denominations and put them into circulation in December 2022.
Emefiele set January 31st, 2023 as the end date for the previous denominations.
Despite protests from Nigerians, the CBN governor insisted on the January 31st deadline.
