This is a national disgrace in Nigeria.
Ms Fatma Samoura, Secretary-General of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), has reminded the Super Falcons of Nigeria that FIFA opted to give prize money directly to players because of players like them.
The FIFA secretary general addressed the Super Falcons in their dressing room following their 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.
“It’s been difficult,” they said, adding that they had to “face the reality of Nigeria.”
She did, however, emphasize that the prize money would be paid to them – the players – for the first time due of such facts.
“It is because of you that the FIFA women’s world cup prize money will be paid directly to you, the players,” Samoura said to applause from the nine-time African champions.
Former Arsenal player and football analyst Ian Wright also sent a message to the Nigeria Football Federation after the Super Falcons won a historic match against the tournament’s co-hosts, Australia, on Thursday, requesting that the NFF pay up.
