Godswill Akpabio, president of the Senate, has stated that Congressional salaries are inadequate to meet the needs of their constituents.
On Monday, during a debate on a resolution sponsored by Abdulraman Kawu Suleiman, Akpabio made the suggestion in light of the urgency with which the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) must act to avert a strike.
He emphasized, however, that legislators’ monthly salary of N14.250 million is woefully inadequate.
From what we can tell, the combined salaries and expenses of senators in the Senate amount to around N14.2 million every month.
The monthly expenses of a senator are estimated to be N13.5 million.
But what I’m saying is that you need to keep receipts for all of the N13.5 million a month that you spend. However, the N750,000 you are given to spend without being held accountable for your actions was revealed by ex-Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna Central.
The Senate President responded to Kawu’s motion by saying that Nigerians should be more patient with the government as it devises steps to mitigate the pain caused by the elimination of the subsidy on petroleum goods.
