After Lauren James’ dismissal from the game against Nigeria, the English Football Association issued a statement.
James was sent off for stamping on Super Falcons player Michelle Alozie in the second half.
The Chelsea striker receives an immediate one-game suspension, which may be increased by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
As an FA spokesman put it:
Lauren feels terrible about the behavior that resulted in the ejection from the game. This behavior is very unexpected of her.
We will be there for Lauren the whole time, and we will advocate for her. We will not comment further until a decision has been reached by FIFA’s disciplinary committee, which we completely respect.
The FA is currently awaiting word from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee on the length of her punishment.
Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun was suspended for the first three games of the competition after getting sent off in the Super Falcons’ opening group stage encounter.
